Chris Lake is known for contributing to the underground sound by adding just the right vocals, sound design, and melody to cross over to pop audiences. With tracks like Turn of the Lights, Deceiver, Free Your Body, and I want You, it seems that Chris Lake & house music anthems go hand in hand. Curated in 2017, Black Book Records allowed Lake to expand on his catalog, signing records from artists such as Cloone, Biscuits, Noizu, Eli Brown, & even Green Velvet.
Armand Van Helden was one of the main house producers coming from the early 90's along with Todd Terry, Erick Morillo, and Roger Sanchez. His dance tracks have inspiration tracing back to rave, disco, and his early hip hop & freestyle sound. My favorite Armand Van Helden record is You Don't Know Me (featuring Duane Harden) which was a UK number one in 1998.
You cant talk about disco with out referencing Arthur Baker. Starting as a disco DJ he then got into producing where he was known for tape edits, sampling and programing synthetic drums. A perfect example of Baker's production techniques would be his contribution to Afrika Bambaataas electronic hip hop smash - Planet Rock. Victor Simonelli was one of the hottest house producers to come out of New York in the 90's. He has or worked with with and remixed artists like Kerri Chandler, Nile Rogers, Frankie Knuckles, Michael Jackson & Quincy Jones.
You can hear a bit of each collaborators sound in The Answer. For me, groovy house drums, sampling old records, and soulful rave chords don't get old. Check out this fresh house tune in the link below.
